- ZZ Top FAQ
- Maintained by Peter Zurich (pzurich@uiuc.edu)
-
-
- To answer your first question: YES, I know this is incomplete. I just
- started working on it the other day so I know it's missing a LOT of
- information and a lot of frequently-asked questions.
-
- If you have information or questions for this, please send them to me.
- I'd be happy to include anything appropriate in here. Also if you have
- an answer to any of these questions that I can include, let me know!
-
-
- 1. Where can I find ZZ Top resources on the Internet?
-
- I maintain a WWW page at http://www.cen.uiuc.edu/~pz3900/zztop.html
- which contains all the important information. Lyrics, album covers,
- pictures, etc. I am also starting a mailing list; email me at pzurich@uiuc.edu
- to be included. Lone-Wolf Management, ZZ Top's agents, are aware of the
- web page and have actually helped out with lyrics and press releases and
- such. They're to be commended for their positive interest in the Internet.
-
-
- 2. Where can I find rare, imported, or hard-to-find ZZ Top recordings?
-
- CDNow (at http://www.cdnow.com/) has a decent-sized collection
- of import recordings. Another place to try for rare and collector-type
- items is Goldmine magazine, which is an industry periodical with a fairly
- small circulation (about 30,000 I believe). It's sold at specialty record
- stores.
- You could also try asking around for imports in record stores.
- Usually used CD stores are a better bet than the large chains like Tower.
- Cities like Springfield, IL and Champaign, IL seem to have stores with this
- type of material for currently-popular and alternative bands. They may also
- be able to order the more obscure stuff like ZZ Top. But to find ZZ Top on
- the shelf, you'll likely have to go to New York's SoHo or someplace similar.
-
-
- 3. What does the name ZZ Top mean?
-
- I haven't the faintest idea. There are rumors about a ranch
- called the double-Z and a place called ZZ hill, but none of these are
- confirmed. Among the wilder unconfirmed rumors, someone says that
- a friend of his with inside knowledge claims that the name stands for
- the head of a penis. A friend of mine also says that there's a brand
- of rolling papers named ZZ Top and that this might link to some early
- marijuana symbolism in their music. (I am not sure about the latter part
- of that)
-
-
- 4. What's with the Ten Foot Pole lyrics?
-
- This is one of their more interesting songs, lyrics-wise. Speak
- the lyrics out loud quickly and they seem to resemble English. Listen to
- the recording of the song on El Loco and their rendition of the lyrics
- sounds more like another instrument than a human voice at times. What
- do they mean? I have no idea.
-
-
- 5. Should I buy the Sixpack or the individual albums?
-
- Depends what you're in it for. If you just want to finish off
- your collection quickly and easily, go for it. If you're a real music
- aficionado though, you should probably go for the individual albums. I
- understand that the sequencing and remixing job on the sixpack isn't
- that great. Plus with the individual albums you get the satisfaction of
- having that many more ZZ album covers in your collection.
- Besides, it shouldn't be that expensive to acquire all the
- individual albums. You can buy em used if you're on a tight budget, which
- isn't that bad.. buying them new isn't so bad either. Here in Champaign,
- IL, there is fierce competition in between all the CD stores. A couple
- stores have popped up selling new CD's at $11 and below. Very affordable!
-
-
- 6. What are ZZ Top's plans for the future?
-
- There are another couple albums due out on ZZ Top's $40-million
- deal with RCA. The band was reportedly writing material for their next
- disc (which should be out in the next six months) backstage during the
- Antenna tour.
-
- 7. Pop Culture sightings (or hearings) of ZZ Top
- Back to the Future III - They appear as a 3-piece band in some
- sort of festival that the townspeople are having. Check the WWW
- page for a scan.
-
- Beavis & ButtHead - Legs and Viva Las Vegas videos are shown.
- Additionally, in the episode 'Beard Boys,' B&B glue hair to their
- faces to try to "be cool, like ZZ Top."
-
- Married With Children - Sharp Dressed Man is heard in the background
- of an episode called "If I Could See Me Now." We're even treated
- to Al dancing along as he tries on sunglasses.
-
- Calvin & Hobbes - Calvin asks his mother for permission to grow a
- long beard "like the guys in ZZ Top" in a strip that appears in
- the "really big C&H compilation, the name of which escapes me
- right now." - Contributed by flubby@iglou.com
-
-
- 99: Did you know?
- - ZZ Top applied to NASA to become the first lounge act to play
- aboard the space shuttle
